Site-Specific Thread Spool Works, 2007 |
|||||
The New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) presents four public installations by the artist Devorah Sperber. Created specifically for the lobby of One Penn Plaza, this New York artist has made a series of artworks inspired by the architecture, history and popularity of the original Pennsylvania Station, which was once located on this block. These sculptures present iconic imagery associated with the old Penn Station, but also allude to the current Penn Station that rumbles underground below, while simultaneously looking forward to the new Moynihan Station planned for the future. Ms. Sperber's site-specific works explore one of the quintessential facts of moving around (and cooling down!) in this city: the subway. This intensive system of connecting many people, places and things give this very location a significant role in the heart of New York and touches upon all the inhabitants and visitors to this magnificent city. Ms. Sperber was a recipient of an Artists' Fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts in the discipline of Sculpture in 2005. She recently had a solo exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, entitled The Eye of the Artist: The Work of Devorah Sperber. The artist lives and works in New York.
